Primate Keeper

Job Description:
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Primate Keeper to join our animal care team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in animal husbandry, particularly with experience in the care of primates, and a genuine commitment to wildlife conservation. This section includes a diverse range of primates including 2 species of lemur, 2 species of slow loris, 3 species of callitrichids, capuchins, squirrel monkeys, owl monkeys as well as sloth, prehensile tailed porcupines, armadillos, cuscus and echidnas. There are plans to expand this section further in the next 12-18 months with the addition of more primate species in a variety of new habitats.

Responsibilities:
- Provide daily care and husbandry for a diverse collection of primates, including feeding, cleaning, and enrichment activities.
- Monitor the health and behaviour of animals on the section, and report any abnormalities.
- Maintain & clean section enclosures, ensuring they meet or exceed standards for animal welfare.
- Implement enrichment programs to promote natural behaviours.
- Collaborate with other staff including veterinary staff, and participate in medical procedures and treatments as needed.
- Assist with behavioural observations and data collection for research and conservation efforts.
- Engage with zoo visitors through educational experiences and talks with guests.

Qualifications:

- Qualification in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science/Management, or related field.
- Previous experience working with primates in a zoo setting is essential.
- Strong understanding of primate behaviour, biology, and nutritional requirements.
- Excellent observational skills and ability to recognise signs of illness or distress in animals.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and able to perform physically demanding tasks.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Commitment to wildlife conservation and promoting public awareness of conservation issues.

- Starting from £24,119.04. Salary commensurate with experience of candidate.
